I loved the David Beckham documentary and I knew very little about his professional struggles until I watched the show.
My sons and I love football (soccer). Football and sports are about so many things, but for me it has come to symbolise recovery. Not just physical but also mental.
David Beckham epitomises this spirit of recovery and resilience. After his red card in the 1996 World Cup versus Argentina the criticism was so brutal, it would have brought anyone to their knees. He said it was the most difficult time in his career. But, he continued to show up, put in the hours, achieved great things for his club and went on to captain England in the next two World Cups. He became one of the most famous and idolised people on the planet.
I learned 3 things from David Beckham:
1. Keep doing what you love: Beckhams’s words really stayed with me, “I love the game more than anyone has ever loved this game.”
2. A strong support network lets you take on the world: He says, “my family is everything.”
3. Keep pushing yourself and take (calculated) risks: Moving from Real Madrid to LA Galaxy, a place that was then considered the “backwater” of soccer, was a MAJOR risk. He did it anyway.
Beckham is fearless. But none of us is born fearless. We get there through a series of choices we make, each of which gives us a little bit more courage to take the next step. Being fearless is a state of mind.
In what areas of your life do you want to be fearless?
